Without involving the lymph nodes breast cancer may spread. In case the tumor lies in the part of the breast, it may spread into the internal nodes which can be found beneath the sternum and between the ribs. Cancer can spread the blood flow across without being discovered from the system. In the body, cancer has spread to distant organs in ten percent of breast cancer analyses. A diagnosis of Stage IV breast cancer can indicate cancer has been present, but not discovered in the breast for a while or a progression of the disease. To help detect breastfeeding cancer in its early stages when it is most treatable, women should follow the instructions for early detection based on the American Cancer Society including monthly breastfeeding self-examinations, annual clinical breastfeeding examinations, and annual mammography. Metastatic breast cancer might also happen from a recurrence of breast cancer after initial treatment.

There are 3 types of breast feeding cancer recurrences: local, regional, and remote. Regional and local recurrences are often less severe than distant recurrences and could be discovered by mammography or seen as abnormalities with breast cancer tests. Once a regional or local recurrence is discovered, doctors will order a wide range of other tests to ascertain if cancer has metastasized to distant organs. Blood tests measure non-specific markers found in this blood which may be followed with time. Two such markers for breastfeeding cancer are CEA and CA 1. These markers have a tendency to be elevated in women with metastatic breastfeeding cancer. 

Nevertheless, since the tests aren't very sensitive, they aren't usually very helpful for patients with early-stage breastfeeding cancers.
